“ĢƵ are a strategy within New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) designed to support the whole child. By partnering with community-based organizations (CBOs), ĢƵ provide wraparound supports that help students succeed academically, such as expanded learning time, mental health services, and family engagement.
NYCPS partnered with Robin Hood to launch the Next Generation ĢƵ (NGCS) Pilot for the 2023–2024 academic year. The pilot was aimed at building on the existing Community School model by integrating stronger academic alignment and instructional leadership into school communities. This was accomplished through three enhancements: collaborative leadership development, professional learning and coaching for school leaders (instructional leadership development), and game-based math curriculum in kindergarten classrooms (the “High 5s” program).
In 2024, NYC Opportunity partnered with NYCPS and the RAND Corporation — a nonprofit research organization that conducts rigorous, evidence-based analysis to help leaders make informed policy decisions — to evaluate the Next Generation ĢƵ (NGCS) Pilot program. The evaluation studied the implementation of the pilot, its successes and challenges, and offered recommendations to improve the model and its implementation.
To better understand the goals, implementation, and lessons from the NGCS Pilot, we spoke with two senior administrators at NYCPS. This first post is our conversation with David Dianora, Senior Administrator for the Office of ĢƵ. David has worked with ĢƵ for over a decade and now supports the initiative across all 419 ĢƵ citywide. In this Q&A, David reflects on the pilot’s design, key challenges, and what its findings mean for the future of ĢƵ in New York City.”
